It’s been a bustling few months here at Sticky Rice Cooking School, where the aroma of mouthwatering dishes and the joy of culinary exploration have filled our kitchen.
From star-studded cooking classes to unforgettable culinary nights, here’s a taste of what we’ve been up to!

A Star in the Kitchen: Matilda’s Charli Grant Kicks Goals in Our Cooking Class!

We had the absolute pleasure of hosting Matilda’s star Charli Grant and her partner Lachy for an exclusive, private cooking class. Guided by our newest, talented chef Jon K., Charli and Lachy created a delicious feast, enjoying a romantic half-day together before Charli headed off to the Paris Olympics 2024.

At just 22, Charli has traveled the globe, and with the challenges of a long-distance relationship, every moment together is precious. The kitchen was filled with laughter and warmth as they cooked up a storm, making for a truly memorable day. We were delighted to host such lovely guests!

Charli Grant, one of Australia’s brightest young soccer talents, has quickly risen to international prominence, all while proudly representing her roots in South Australia.

Charli has already made a significant impact as a key defender for the Matildas, showcasing her exceptional skills on some of the world’s biggest stages, including the Tokyo Olympics and the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Her journey began in Adelaide’s local clubs, where her talent and determination soon captured the attention of national selectors. Charli’s fearless approach to the game and outstanding athleticism have been instrumental in her rapid rise. But her achievements extend beyond the pitch; Charli is also deeply committed to giving back to her community, regularly mentoring young athletes and inspiring the next generation of soccer stars in South Australia.

Thinking of planning a special occasion? Our private master classes offer the VIP treatment with iconic chefs, personalized tuition, and all the right ingredients for an unforgettable experience.

A Night to Remember with Chef Duncan Welgemoed from Africola!

On Friday, July 7th, our kitchen transformed into a vibrant hub of flavors and fun as we welcomed Chef Duncan Welgemoed from the award-winning restaurant Africola.

Guests were treated to a four-course dining experience, featuring dishes like:

Hot Smoked Ocean Trout, Durban Curry with Mussels, Masala Lamb, and Pina Colada Cake.

The night was nothing short of magical, with Chef Duncan’s culinary expertise on full display.

Our guests, dressed to impress, mingled, laughed, and savored every bite, all while sipping on premium boutique wines. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the bold flavors of Africola’s signature dishes and the warmth of Sticky Rice’s hospitality.

Helmed by chef Duncan Welgemoed, Africola serves up North African dishes out of its woodfired oven, including peri peri chicken with chakalaka relish, pork neck and fried cauliflower. The multi award-winning restaurant is extremely popular, so book ahead for one of its 6pm or 8.15pm sittings.

The kitchen menu is seasonal, but one of the enduring standouts is the round of tea sandwiches made with hot chicken dripping.

On the wine list you’ll find Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Barossa drops, mostly on the low intervention winemaking spectrum.

A Unique Thai Culinary Journey with Chef Terry from Soi.38!

Chef Terry Intrarakhamhaeng from Soi.38 has been captivating our guests with his hands-on Thai cooking classes, and each one has been a sell-out success!

With his expertise in dishes from Thailand’s six regions, Chef Terry takes participants on an unparalleled culinary journey.

The upcoming classes in October and November are your last chance this year to experience Chef Terry’s mastery.

Expect to create and savor dishes like Papaya Som Tum, Chicken Larb, Stir-fried Eggplant with Thai Basil, and Stir-fried Drunken Noodle.

Soi.38 was opened in October 2014. Originally named ‘Sukhumvit Soi 38 Thai Street Food’ (but always known by ‘Soi 38’) after the address of a famous street food market in Bangkok, the restaurant began as a spot to serve the street food snacks and dishes that could not be found on Adelaide Thai restaurant menus.
Today, Soi 38 has evolved to showcase the dishes of Thailand’s regions, history and ethnic minority groups. The menu is seasonal and recipes have been gathered by Executive Chef, Terry Intarakhamhaeng from across regional and remote parts of Thailand, ethnic minority groups and hill tribes. Other recipes are sourced from historical records and handed down through family lines.

Using only the best local ingredients, Soi 38 has a commitment to source produce as ethically as possible. Some Australian native ingredients are substituted for Thai ones where appropriate, such as using kangaroo tail in place of water buffalo tail for example.

A Delightful Finale with Chef Phil Helyard – Or Is It?

This bright, buzzing place hasn’t faltered for a second since opening in 2013. The fitout is industrial but warm. The staff relaxed but efficient. And it’s always bustling, but rarely raucous. The giant chalkboard menu shifts around the seasons and a selection of trusted favourites and surprising newcomers.  On a given evening, you might find corporate highflyers in a booth, a rowdy group of mates on the bench tables, and couples sitting outside, people-watching in one of Adelaide’s most established laneways. Peel St offers a friendly, generous welcome to everyone, every single time.
